Compatibility

How do people choose mates? Is it looks, intelligence, sense of humor? Many people will say one or a combination, but it might be something else.

Start out by reading this article.

To earn extra credit, first, answer these questions:
1. What was the factor these researchers found that people chose for?

2. What do you think that another factor, to choose mates, might be a good one? Explain your reasoning.

3. What other genetic advantages do you think might be seen as ways to "improve" the species?

Finally, design a personals add (this is fictitious, not any personal information) that could be used to advertise for a genetically advantageous mate. You may include a link to a picture of a person that symbolizes these characteristics (this would be a place to have a little fun. Be sure not to include any real pictures of anyone at our school.)

  1. 1) The researchers found that people chose to have genetic difference in DNA, this providing their offspring with a better chance of having immune systems that are genetically more diverse. This, hopefully, increasing the chances of survival for their children.

    2) I think in choosing mates there are several factors that could be considered including similar characteristics such as a sense of humor, political beliefs, and lifestyle values or cultural differences.

    3) Some genetic advantages that could improve the species might include trying to boost the efficency of the immune system. As the article stated, researchers have found that it is the differences which make for successful reproduction and that having healthy
children is important when choosing a mate.

I could not figure out how to post a personal add, so I included another article with more information on this topic, which is what we usually do.

Opposites AttractThis article, like the one I read, summarized the fact that people with unlike DNA often choose each other due to the fact that they want to produce healthy and strong offspring. Although, it also provides insight on this topic and its relation to chromosome number 6, which is found in most vertebrates. It also describes how our decisions on this topic are mainly based on a subconcious basis.

  2. 1) The factor that researchers found that when choosing a mate people look for differences in DNA. They do this so their offspring have a could have a better chance to ward disease off because their immune system genes are more diverse.
    2) I think that personality is another factor people look for when choosing a mate. This would be a reasonable choice since they have to live with them for the rest of their life and they would naturally want someone who has a good personality.
    3) One genetic advantage is the more diverse immune system (like the article stated) . This makes it so the offspring can fight off infections and such better. Another genetic advantage would be rate of response. This make it so they will be able the respond and do things quicker in an emergency.
    4) The perfect person is one with a diverse immune system,
a big brainbig muscles, and a strong working heart.CMM GREEN

  3. 1.The factor that the researchers found was a difference in the genetic difference in DNA. Most couples have very different DNA codes.

    2. I think another factor to choosing mates are a persons reputation, how they are thought by the public.

    3. A stronger and healthier immune system due to these matches could be an advantage

  4. 1) The factor these reserchers found is that people are automatically attracted to opposites. This is because humans are ment to have a diversity in genes and we all make these choices automatically to cause the diversity.
2)Personally I think another factor that would be good for choosing a mate is personality and thier feelings towards things. Also thier actions play an imprtant role too because yes you dont want someone exactly like you but you also want to feel the same way towards things.
3)One genetic advance would be to have a more efficent immune system and yes i know everyone else put that but i agree with them. This is because we would have so much less diseses to worry about getting if we could fight off others that we now struggle with.
4)Yes I already have a boyfriend but other than him, I would be looking for a guy with suttle facial characteristics but also sort of femanine characteristics. And long hair.

  6. 1)The researchers founds that people subconsciously were more likly to choose people with a different genetic makeup then their own. This is in order to create genetic variation and to beifit the offspring with a stronger immunity.

2)I think another major factor is the looks it is important that the person you are with isnt disgusting looking, because your offspring must be socially accepted and good looking people usually succeed at that much easier than ugly ones.

3)healthy children born from parents with diverse genes get the best from 2 people making them possibly more sucessful in academics, athletic competition, and arts. They will also recive a very nice immune system as stated above...by everyone.

4)Wanted-- a human female with, good immunity grat personality and stuff,oh and thisM.A GREEN (yeah dooood i finaly did one)

  7. 1.) This study found that people, when choosing a mate, go for someone with opposite characteristics than them. They have a difference in DNA.

2.) I think that personality would be good to choose a mate because you need to have a sort of similar personality so that you have things in common but not too similar because you'll fight always. For example, if you're both stubborn, there'll always be fights.

3.) I think an advantage could be to maybe have a healthier immune system. Then we wouldn't have to worry about passing diseases.

4.) In a mate, I would look for a guy with maybe light colored eyes, dark hair, taller than me, and kind facial features.

  8. 1. The factor that the researchers found that people chose for was genetic makeup that was different than their own. This was likely to be an evolutionary strategy to ensure healthy reproduction because of genetic variability.
    2. I think a person’s personality is one of the main factors for choosing mates. When choosing someone, you’ll want to get along with them and not be fighting every moment of your life.
    3. An advantage would be having a healthier immune system. The immune system is a factor that plays a role in having a healthy offspring. So a healthier immune system creates healthier children.
    4. I would be looking for a guy that has dark hair and someone that is taller than me.

  9. 1)The factor these researchers found that people chose for is differences in DNA and face symmetry.

2)Another factor that mates might chose is personality and humor because you have to communticate and talk to that person for the rest of your life you dont want some plain person that dose not not talk or want to have fun.

3)An advantage would be to have a healthy immune system because you are going to want to be protected from diseases that may affect you.

4)I would be interseted in a guy that is alittle taller then me, has blond hair, and light eyes
