New species discovered.

It seems that scientists are continually finding new species.

This link shows photos and a short article found in a rain forest , in a cave, and some in Antarctica. You can even find the top 10 of 2007.

For this project you have to find a site with information about the discovery of new species. You can take a look at any of the sites linked to in this entry, but your project must include a link to a reference that you found.

This does not have to be living species, it could be about a new fossil species. Find a site and link to it. Then you have to write two paragraphs (each paragraph should be at least 3 well constructed sentences) about the discovery. You can include information about how this adds information, fills in gaps in understanding or simply expands the database of known species. Or you could just discuss two or more of the species found.

This project will be due by midnight on Sunday 5/24.

  1. My extra credit project is on the recently found Darwinius masillae. This fossil was from 47 million years ago. Itis the fossil of a primate that links humans to apes. The fossil has cat like legs which shows evolutionary changes in having apes stand upright. This is a breakthrough that can confirm Charles Darwin's idea of evolution.
The fossil was found in a pit in Frankfurt, where a volcano had erupted and killed the species, but then preserved it very well. It was found orginally in 1983, but no one at that time thought it had anything to do with science. A scientist believed it did and has studied it to this day. The scientists figure that this fossil will be in textbooks for years to come because it shows that the ape's legs have evloved into standing upright. if you would like to see this link, click Here. I think it's great and that everyone that doubted Charles Darwin, owes him an apology.

  2. This article that I found Is about a new species of shrew that was the size of a small dog, covered in orange and grayish fur, and had a long snout sort of like an elephant. It was found in remote area in the Tanzanian forest. The gray-faced elephant-shrew weighs about 1.5 pounds and is between 25 and 50 percent larger than any previously discovered species of elephant-shrews that were previously known about.
The article says that it’s relatives include manatees, elephants, and the aardvark. This is quite amazing since all of those animals are quite different. This particular species of shrew just goes to show that we are simply narrowing the gaps in evolutionary tree of life.

  3. The link I found has to do with a newly discovered fossil found in Antartica called an ostracod. Ostracods are tiny cousins of shrimp. The ostracods were discovered in the sediments of Lake Boreas an ancient lake in Antartica. The discovery of these fossils now leads scientists to believe that at one time Antartica was probably much warmer than it is today.

According to the article, scientists believed that around 14 million year ago, the climate in Antartica resembled modern day Alaska. Over millions of year, however, Antartica has become much colder. Ostracods are alive today, but can only live in regions where summer temperatures are not below 41 degrees. That means that ostracods could not live under the conditions present in modern day Antartica. Therefore, the discovery of the osttracods at this location help prove the theory that supstantial cooling has occured in the Antartic climate. This can help scientists understand the significant climate changes which have occured in Antartica which I also think could be tied in perhaps understading the effects of global warming.

  4. New discoveries have found over 88 new species of spiders. One of these spiders are known as the Heteropoda maxima and is considered to be among the largest Huntsman spiders ever encountered. This spider has a leg span of over 3o centimeters! These species are not lethal killers, their venom is not potent enough.

Click HereAnother species discovered is a green pit viper. This viper boasts scales of overlapping brillant green which resemble leaves. This makes it perfect protective coloration for its tropical habitat. The green pit viper has two off-colored spots above the eyes resembling horns. This gives the already menacing-look snake an even more ominous visage.

  5. NEW SPECIESA new species of frog was found in the Andes mountains in 2009. The frog is smallest ever found in the Andes and one of the smallest in the world. Its avreage size is between 11 and 12 millimeters long, thats smaller then a dime. Unlike most frogs who lay hundreads of eggs and need water to survive, this frog only lays 2 eggs each 1/3 the size of its mother. The mother protects the eggs till hatched into froglets not needing a water enviroment to survive.

  6. JS YELLOW Continued....
The frogs are located between 9,925 and 10,466 feet in the clouorest of the Andes. they live in the leaf liter on the ground where it is moist. Its size made it very hard for scientist to discover it.
