Environmental Cleanups

Through its manufacturing many of the world's industries have contaminated the land around them. When technology "caught up" many of the contaminated sites were recognized and the governments either forced businesses to clean up or underwent cleanups themselves.

The Hudson River is the largest federal Superfund site in the US, prompting the largest cleanup project in history. The Love Canal was another site, in New York State, that had been declared toxic.

For this project you should do some research on the industrial cleanup projects or the ways that toxic contamination is being prevented. You can start by readind either or both of the links in the above paragraph. Then you must find a site that discusses these issues. You may chose information provided by the environmentalists or the businesses or citizens groups. You should link
to this site and write 2 paragraphs (each paragraph should be at least 3 well constructed sentences) about the site you have chosen, in a way that allows the reader to get the main points of the source.

For this project you may receive 3 additional bonus points for adding an additional link and writing an additional paragraph (same guidelines) from a source with a differing viewpoint on that particular issue. This would give you a 15 score for this project.

This project is due by midnight, Friday 5/15.

  1. Ground Water PolutionGround water is the water benith the ground and surface water is on rhe surface. As many may know alot of surface water is poluted for example the hudson river. What many may not know is that ground water is being poluted also.

Toxins a seping into the ground poluting ground water. NCUA is a water plant that pumps toxins out of the ground water making it more safe for people, plants, and animals. Poluted ground water is unheathy for species that will use it.

  2. Legacy of the Love CanalAfter reading the article from the link that claims the Love Canal has been declared "clean" I read many different view points as to if this were really true or not. The link I found was written by a woman who lived adjacent to the Love Canal site in the late 1970's. Her name is Lois Gibbs and she is currently the executive director of the Center For Health Environment Justice.

It must have been very difficult for the families which lived within the Love Canal boundaries. They were forced to evacuate due to the chemicals which appeared to be leaking into their basements and yards. These chemicals were left over from a dump site which was owned by the Hooker Chemical Company who disposed of 21,000 tons of various chemical wastes until 1952. Once dumping was stopped, the board of education in Niagara Falls approached the chemical company about purchasing the land for the site to become a new school.

Who Was at Fault? This brings to light the question of who was at fault. If you look at the second link I found, it addresses this question which comes down to two factors. Was the Hooker Chemical Company at fault, or was the school district at fault for building a school on a contaminated site?

Hooker Chemical knew what was buried in the acreage which the school district inquired about buying for a new school site. Perhaps the school district was not knowledgeable to know what potential hazards existed on the site. One could think that the chemical company knew of the dangers which existed buried in the site but sold the land anyway. The real losers in the whole deal were the families which bought homes within this area and eventually were sickened and forced to evacuate. It makes sense that people would buy homes in close proximity to a new school and they had no way of knowing what was buried beneath their land.

  3. Hudson River CleanupGE has spent over 1 billion dollars to try and help out in cleaning up the Hudson River from the year 1900 to 2007. They prefered to remove river sediments containing PCBs. They have already started this process and plan to finish this year.

They are working really hard to make sure that there is no public contact with the PCBs that are found in the soil along the Hudson River shore lines. The dried sediments that are removied from the river will be transported to a facility in Texas to be disposed. The 20 years of clean up projects has lowered the amount of PCBs by alot that enter the river at the site. They have began to build innovative tunnels under the river to capture the small amount of PCBs that may be entering the river.

  4. This site Clearwater gives great facts about the amount of PCB's being dumped into the hudson river. Some of these facts are very onesided and portray GE in a bad light. GE promised to cleanup and pay for the damage done to the hudson river.
My source i chose for this project was a site called Scenic Hudson. This sites' main goal is to protect the Hudson Valley's natural beauty. It also talks about the PCB project on the Hudson and many other restoration projects.

  5. The Love Canal Cleanup was located in NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. There was such a large amount of polution in this area the cleanup well over needed. Many say this was a turing poing for the nation. This was because of the superfunds.

Many still to this day do not know if this canal is complety "clean". Peopl living nearby during this horible event were force to evacuate due to harmful chemicals. This effected many people during this time, residece had to flea for 30 days or longer, complaints and such added to the big mess. It was a terible time, and it all started with pollution.

At this point many fingeres pointing in every direction, but all with the same quetsion. What had caused all this? To answer the quetsion it was undecided. Two main sources of this would have to of been the central school district for knowing. Or it was the Hooker Chemical.

The new school brought many wating to live closer. Forcing them to evacuate when this chemical was released. Many doin't know if the school had this intension the whole time, did they want to make people move out of there new homes? They had no idea what the had in store for themselves by buying these homes with sat above harful chemicals.

  6. The goal of the EPA is to remove more than two million cubic yards of river bottom contained within industrial chemicals. They intend to remove hazardous chemicals called PCB’s. Until the mid 70’s, General Electric legally discharged more than one million pounds of them into the Hudson.

Click HereThe EPA calls it one of the biggest river cleanup projects in American history. GE has said that they spent millions in cleanup and that PCB levels in the river have dropped 60 percent since the mid 80’s. The clean up price tag is about $490 million to dredge contaminated sediment from spots all along a 40-mile stretch of the river.

  7. The cleanup of the Hudson River took many years to start until 2002. In 2002 the Environmental Protection Agency forced General Electric, a company that dumped over 1 million pounds of cancer causing PCB's into the Hudson, to clean up what GE did in the past.

The action though, has not carried out completely since it's start in 2002. The EPA
and GE have reached a deal to stop the cleanup. GE has only removed about 10% of the contaminated sediment which was caused by the waste from the Hudson River.

  8. Click HereIn this web sit federal and state officals are attepting to clean up the Monroe. They plan to clean the toxic sediment from the River Raisin between the Automotive Components Holdings site and the river’s mouth. The Environmental Protection Agency took a boat to the site and checked out the area. They took the poisoned sediment for more investagation.

EPA are trying to launch a contamination in June.PCBs are long-banned insulating on plants and animals that can cause cancer. The people are affraid that if they use that chemical than the fish that we eat will infect the people.700000 dollars are being used to take out 80% of the pollsion.

  9. I think the funner cleanup projects take place near bodies of water. I guess it makes for a prettier site?
