Sleepy time

The headline reads "Don't bank on weekend to make up for sleep loss" and the article talks about the way people try to make up for lost sleep.

Many of the choices we make effect our health and our performance. For this project you should start by reading this article. Then write a paragraph that summarized the article. Paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Then you should find and link to an article about one of these topics:
1. Factors that we can change that effect our health.
2. Changes a person can make to their lifestyle that can improve their performance or longevity.
3. A way that science (high tech exercise or monitoring, vitamin/medications to make us healthier) can change our lives or healing.

Finally write a paragraph summarizing the material in that article. Again, paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Make sure you put your ID and class section on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 1/31. Remember that you need to do either this or the previous project. If you do both projects one will count for extra credit. If you did not do the previous article you must do this one.

If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com.

  2. This article is about how when you lose sleep it cannot not easily made up. Scientist found that long and short sleep deprived may be fine when they first wak eup but really after that they may expierence steadily slower reaction times as the ways go on even if they had would try to make it up the night before. The National Institute of Health says that adults need seven to nine hours of sleep in order to have good health. If you dont get enough sleep regulary it can cause health probelms such as a weakened Immune System and memory impairment.

This article is about the things that you cna do as a perosn to improve your heart health. It is good for oyur heart if yo have six walnuts before lunch and dinner. The reason for this is because walnuts are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. These help to decrease inflamation in the arteries sourounding the heart. Another thing that is a good thing for your heart is exersize. You should build up 60 minutes of exersize each day but if you do not have time for all 60, 20 minuntes is a whole lot better than none at all.

  3. This article, provided by Yahoo!News, describes the new research about and related to sleep and the amounts of it that people get. Recently, it has been determined that despite getting a long night of sleep after a few weeks of lack there of, it still is not enough to make up for everything one has lost. Also, it has been said that when a person starts to sleep less and less, they lose the ability to complete everyday tasks efficiently. Things, such as driving without sleep for twenty-four straight hours is equivalent to the amount of alcohol it would take for someone to be over the legal driving limit. A lack of sleep can also weaken the immune system, impair memory, and slow reaction times.
There are several other factors that we control that can affect our health also. Social factors can contribute in many ways, according to this article provided by the Commission to Build a Healthier America. Education, income, work, and early life experiences can have a huge affect on the way a person lives through everyday life. With an education, a person had the ability to make healthy and unhealthy choices based upon their knowledge, poverty is normally linked to poor health, work can have stressful effects on a person and early life experiences such as premature birth can result in health problems or social problems that can negatively impact the way a person lives. Many other factors that are controlled by us can also damage our health, but the way we socialize is one of them.

  4. This article from the Yahoo!News, describes about a new study that shows how that people who only sleep a few hours during the night on a weekday and then try to catch up with on their sleep on a Saturday could lead them to having health issues. The National Institute of Health says that adults need seven to nine hours of sleep at night to keep healthy. They also say that lack of sleep can cause memory impairment, and a weakened immune system. The lack of sleep that a person gets, can lead to car crashes and other accidents. Staying Awake for 24 hours is comparable to the amount of alcohol it would take for someone to be over the legal driving limit. Not getting the right amount of sleep for a day can weaken the ability for someone to do everyday tasks efficiently.

In the article that I found here, it discusses about a new research that confirms benifits of calcium and vitamin D in preventing fractures. At the Copenhagen University, in Denmark, a team of colleagues studied the results of seven trials from around the world, that assessed the affects of just Vitamin D in peoples lives or the affects of Vitamin D and Calcium. Studies showed that people that had just the Vitamin D did not show any effects from it.

  5. Research shows that when you’re tired and you take a nap or sleep longer that it really doesn’t help. Scientists proved this by finding nine young and healthy people to stay awake for 33 hours and sleep for 10 hours in between. This showed that their circadian clocks couldn’t adjust and their loss of sleep showed that theirs was the same to someone who only sleeps for 5 and a half hour.

Tiago Duarte, Marcus S. Cooke and G. Don Jones researchers at the University of Leicester and Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Portugal found that found that vitamin C promotes wounds to heal. They had found proof that people who take vitamin C supplements that DNA repair is unregulated. “We investigated which genes are activated by vitamin C in these cells, which are responsible for skin regeneration,” says Tiago Duarte, who was at the University of Leicester, and is now at the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Portugal.

  6. An article called "Don't bank on weekend to make up for sleep loss" was written by Lauran Neergaard who is an Associated Press Medical Writer. Her article focuses on new research that shows chronic sleep loss cannot be cured that easily. Scientists teased apart the effects of short- and long-term sleep loss and found that the chronically sleep-deprived may function normally soon after waking up, but experience steadily slower reaction times as the day wears on, even if they had tried to catch up the previous night. According to Dr. Daniel Cohen,"We know that staying awake 24 hours in a row impairs performance to a level comparable to a blood-alcohol content beyond the legal limit to drive."

In an article from nytimes.com the AP made an article called Fight Against Fat Goes High-Tech With New Devices. This article explains how The fight against fat is going high-tech. To get an inside look at eating and exercise habits, scientists are developing wearable wireless sensors to monitor overweight and obese people as they go about their daily lives. The experimental devices are designed to keep track of how many minutes they work out, how much food they consume and even whether they are at a fast-food joint when they should be in the park. The goal is to cut down on self-reported answers that often cover up what's really happening. According to William McCarthy, a professor of public health and psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, ''As a researcher, I'm a professional voyeur, and I like to find out whatever I can about human subjects, but if I were a subject, I'd be concerned about the level of detail that's being captured about my behavior from moment to moment.''

  7. I read the article, Don't bank on weekend to make up for sleep loss. It was about the negative effects of not getting enough sleep (7-9 hours a night). People who lose sleep have immune system problems and memory problems. They react slowly and get into car accidents more often than well-rested people. Staying awake for 24 hours makes a person act the way a drunk person would act.

The link is an article called Simple Lifestyle Changes May Improve Cognitive Function And Brain Efficiency. It is about different things people can do to improve the way their brain works. Some of the things are exercise, a healthy diet, brain exercises, and ways to reduce stress. The study said there were improvements in the people who participated after only 2 weeks.

  8. In the article, "Dont Bank on the Weeekends to Make up for Sleep Loss", they discuss how sleep deprivation effects how you function from day to day. When you get very little sleep, a person can be affected as if they were drunk when it comes to daily activites like driving. Adults should get around 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Dr.Cohen also performed testing on a regular basis with volunteers about the effect of staying up all night and only getting 5 1/2 hours of sleep every night. Their circadian clocks could not adjust which makes you automatically wake up. So, it is important to get a good nights sleep so you can function properly.

This article was about the amount of water needed for a healthy body. Everyone has heard " You have to drink 8 glasses of water everyday." Dr. Donohue from Florida says that it is not true. Many vegetables, meats and drinks contain water will do. This does not mean to say stop drinking water but it is saying that 8 glasses is not needed. If your urine is a darker color than normal then this meens that you have an insufficient amount of water. If you are an athlete, then you should drink more water than someone who is not exercising.

  9. In this article it says that when you dont sleep well and you try and catch up on sleep in one night, it doesn't work. Scientists found that it may make you feel refreshed at first but after the day keeps going you react slower to things. The National Institute of health says adults need seven to nine hours of sleep for good health. Regularly getting to little increases the risk of health problems, including memory imparement and a weakend immune system. More immediately, to little sleep effects reaction times; sleepiness is to blame for car crashes and other accidents.

In the article Can emotions affect our diet, when your stressed and emotional you tend to eat more tha you would if you weren't being stressed. when your emotionl it doesn't matter about what you overeat a lot. you also over eat when your alone, nothing to do, not able to adjuct well to a particular enviroment.. the only cure to control this situation is proper thinking. 11. In the artice it is stating that if you pull an all nighter or only get a little bit of sleep then sleep in and try to get it back. This does not work your body just makes it seem like it does but after time goes on in the day your body slows down and you have a slower reaction.

You can help prevent your body from being tired and staying healthy by setting yourself a time to go to bed every night and have a schedule with a time to wake up to so you have the same amount of sleep every night and dont suffer from lack of sleep. If you get the same amount of sleep all the time then you would be able to have the same body reaction and your body would not slow down through the day.

  13. This article is about the sleep cycle in humans. Many Americans in the united states get less than 6 hours of sleep a night. It is not healthy to get too little sleep. It has been proven by scientist that sleep deprived people have a higher risk of getting sick and memory impairment. Americans need at least 9 hours of sleep a day, it keeps the immune system functioning properly.

A recent study about sitting has been proven to be deadly. Everyone in the entire world sits everyday but it has been proven to be deadly. Even sitting for a few hours in front of the television or doing your homework is a hazardous health effect. Sitting increases the risks of being overweight, heart attacks, and death. Scientist say that a way to improve this is to be athletic and active. Even being active still poses threats but it decreases the risks a little.

  14. Studies have showed that sleeping in doesn't really do much. Not much sleep can result in really slow reaction times which can cause a lot of accidents when driving. And adults should get 7-9 hours of sleep.
