Health Risks

As we study the different systems of the body we see how interactions provide a delicate balance to provide health. This article "Smoking, drinking up risks of gut, throat cancers" discusses some behavioral health risks.

For this project you should start by reading this article. Then write a paragraph that summarized the article. Paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Then you should find and link to an article about one of these topics:
1. Why large studies are favored over small ones.
2. Other health effects of smoking and/or drinking.
3. What cancer is and other possible causes.

Finally write a paragraph summarizing the material in that article. Again, paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Make sure you put your ID and class section on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 1/17. Remember that you need to do either this or the next project. If you do both projects one will count for extra credit. If you do not do this article you must do the next one.

If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com.

  1. This article from yahoo.com called "Smoking, drinking up risks of gut, throat cancers," explains how a new study confirms that smoking raises a person's risks of the major forms of esophageal and stomach cancers, while drinking has more narrow effects. The study was done on more than 120,000 Dutch adults for 16 years, researchers found that smoking increased the risk of the two main forms of stomach cancer, as well as the two forms of esophageal cancer -- by anywhere from 60 percent to 263 percent versus non-smokers.Alcohol, in contrast, affected only the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, the form found in the upper part of the esophagus.

    An article
I found from thaindian.com called "Study: Smoking might cause blindness" explains how
the ophthalmologists at the University of California-Los Angeles have done a study related to smoking and its effects on the eye. The study showed that
there is an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration, due to smoking and this can cause damage to the center of the retina, which in turn, can even cause blindness. Due to smoking the smokers have an increase risk of this retina disease of 11%.

  2. This article, provided by Yahoo!News, explains the increased risk a person has when engaging in activities such as smoking or drinking. The findings from a study that has taken place over the last sixteen years shows an increased rate that smokers have in getting stomach or esophageal cancers. Also, people who drink more alcohol daily are more likely to form cancers and other diseases in the upper part of their esophagus. A group of 852 Dutch adults were studied over the last decade and a half, and the majority of them proved to have developed one of these diseases, or another related disease caused from drinking or smoking.

The article I found, provided by Medical News Today, gives the definition of cancer, and several different types and causes. Cancer is basically the uncontrolled growth of cells. When these cells, which are basically damaged, divide uncontrollably, they form lumps, calls tumors, which can effect the digestive, circulatory, and nervous systems. Sometimes, these tumors will spread before they are treated, bringing the cancer to other parts of the body, and making it a harder battle to fight. Based upon where these tumors form can diagnose the type of cancer it is (ex. A tumor in a woman’s breast is a sign of breast cancer) and treatment can be administered from there.

  3. This article is about the risk of smoking and drinking. A new study shows that people who smoke have a much greater risk of getting esophageal and stomach cancers while drinking has a more narrow risk. This study showed that 120,000 Dutch adults for 16 years found that smoking increased their risk of getting two forms of cancer. Also there was another risk if getting two forms of esophageal cancer. Alcohol on the other hand only showed a risk of esophageal squamous. This is found in the upper part of the esophagus.

Smoking has many health risks that go along with it. None of them sound very good so I do not know why anyone would ever want to start. In cigarettes there is what is called tar which coats your lungs just like soot in a chimney. This over time causes cancer. Another thing that could happen to you is that you could get lung cancer. An interesting fact is that men who smoke are ten times more likely to get lung cancer than to someone who does not. One in two lifetime smokers will die from there horrible habit. The scary thing about this is that half of these people will die in there middle ages.

  5. The article was about the effects that smoking and drinking have on the body. In a Dutch study, researchers found that people who smoked were 60 to 263 percent more likely to get cancer of the stomach or the esophagus the people who didn’t smoke. The study also found that people who drank the equivalent of 2 – 3 glasses of wine per day were 5 times more likely to get esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer that affects the upper part of the esophagus. If you smoke and drink, your risk increases to 8 times that of non-smokers/non-drinkers to get cancer. Smoking and drinking are not the only causes of cancer. Cancer of the stomach can also be attributed to family history and diet, and cancer of the esophagus can be caused from being overweight and by acid reflux.

In an article titled Tobacco smoke and alcohol harm liver worse as combo, researchers studied how breathing second hand smoke and drinking ethanol affected mice. They found that the mice who inhaled the smoke and who were fed the ethanol were 110 percent more likely to develop liver fibrosis than mice that breathed clean air and didn’t drink any ethanol. They were also had 65 percent more liver fibrosis than mice who only breathed in the smoky air. The smoky air and ethanol also increased heart disease in the mice. The study also said that 53,000 people die each year from diseases caused by second hand smoke and that excessive drinking is the third leading cause of deaths in the US.

  6. IN this article researchers found out that smoking raises a person's risk of major forms of esophageal and stomach cancers.in a study that followed more than 120,000 dutch adults for 16 years and found that smoking increases the rick of the two main forms of stomach cancer and the two main forms of esophageal cancer from 60% to 263% versus non smokers.
alcohol affected only the risk of squamous cell carcinoma, the form found in the upper part of the esophagus. people who smoke are more at risk to get these cancer's than people who have never smoked or drank in their lives.

In an artcicle called the Harmful effects of smoking it says that smoking can cause heart attacks and stokes. it slows your blood flow cutting off oxygen to your feet and hands. some smokers end up having their limbs amputated.Lung cancer from smoking is caused by the tar in the tabacco smoke. men who smoke are ten times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers. Smoking causes around one in five deaths from heart disease. In younger people, three out of four deaths from heart disease are due to smoking. One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Half of these deaths will occur in middle age.

  7. Scientist’s research shows that smoking and drinking causes esophageal and stomach cancers. They found this by testing 120,000 Dutch adults for 16 years, which they found that smoking increases two main forms of stomach cancer. If drinking more than 30 grams a day of alcohol then that person is likely to get the cancers.

Other risks of smoking or drinking. One risks could be Alzheimer’s disease, scientists have found links to people with Alzheimer’s, had a smoking or drinking condition before getting this disease. They also believe that people who smoke and drink more than they should, have a higher risk of getting this disease.

  9. The article provided by Reuters, is about how smoking and drinking raises the chance for someone to get throat and stomach cancer. In a study of Dutch smokers anywhere from 60 percent to 263 percent chance raised of getting esophageal or stomach cancer compared to a non smokers. The consumption of alcohol only raises the chance of cancer in the upper lip. In recent decades it has been found that more people have esophageal cancer. Test results show that smokers had a much higher chance of getting these cancers, and also smokers that have quit also have elevated risk of these cancers.

The Iarticle found was describing what cancer is and what causes it. Cancer is cells that grow out of control and abnormally. Cancer hurts the body when the cells grow into large masses called tumors. Tumors interfere with the normal way the body functions. Cancer is believed to be caused from cells that grow out of control and interfere with body regulation and never die. Other causes of cancer include your diet and items you come in contact with, as well as the environment you live in.
