Scientists find creatures beneath 600 feet of ice

The headline read "Scientists go 'gaga' to find creatures beneath 600 feet of ice". But scientists have been astounded at other discoveries of life in unexpected places. Adding to this excitement is the upcoming mission to explore under the ice of distant worlds.

For this project For this project you are to read the article and write a paragraph about it. Paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Next you should find another article about one of the following:
1. Other discoveries of life under extreme circumstances.
2. Upcoming and present missions to search for life on other planets.
3. Expected requirements for life.

Finally link to that article and write a well constructed 3 sentence paragraph about your article.

Make sure you put your ID and class section on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 4/3. Remember that you need to do either this or the next project. If you do both projects one will count for extra credit.

Spelling counts. Please do your project in a word processor and then cut and paste it into the comment box. Sloppy work really doesn't save you time, and it there are glaring spelling errors you will lose credit.

If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com. Please tell me exactly what your problem was including any error messages.

  1. In this article, provided by Yahoo!News, scientists who are associated with NASA have recently discovered life under 600 feet of ice. Two different organisms were found, one was an organism distantly related to a shrimp and the other was a tentacle of a jelly fish that is imagined to be a foot or so long. Scientists have marked this as a significant discovery because if it is possible to discover organisms that have the ability to survive under such conditions as the ice these organisms were found under, it is possible that organisms exist on other planets or moons, for example, one of Jupiter’s moons, Europa, is completely covered in ice. There is hope for existence of life in other parts of our universe.

Science Clarified has provided its users with a useful article on the requirements organisms such as humans would need in order to live. First of all, an organism would need to be equipped with a proper environment that contains reasonable climate, food, and water. All of this must be included in the biosphere in which humans exist. The biosphere is a space on or around earth that can contain living organisms. One last important factor in the biosphere is the nutrient cycle, which we need in order to keep living. The nutrient cycle is a process that occurs when all recyclable or waste products created by organisms are broken down to be reused again for energy and nutrients.

  2. In the provided article, two living organism's were found under 600 feet of ice. They were in an extremely harsh environment, and seeing them there is opening the minds of NASA scientists. If organisms can survive in these environments, they could may be able to survive in other extremes like Jupiter's frozen moon, Europa.

In this article from the European Space Agency (ESA) scientists are rethinking the way we search for other life in space. For years, scientists of earth have been trying to pick up signals from space similar to our radio and television broadcasts. But this limits the life we can find to life that has technology. Scientists believe that looking for oxygen in distant planets could prove if there is, or was life on the planet in the last 4 million years.

  3. This article is about NASA and what they saw when they were six hundred feet below an ice sheet in Antarctica. This is making scientist start to think because they thought that only a few microbes could exist. A shrimp like creature came swimming by the video camera they had down there and parked itself in the camera’s cable. Scientist are saying that if shrimp-like creatures are swimming around six hundred feet below than they are thinking that there could possibly be more of them living in more hostile places such as the frozen moon on Jupiter.

The article that I found is about the requirements that are needed in order to live. In order for an organism to live the environmental conditions have to exist. An example of environmental conditions would be temperature, and energy. An organism needs energy to carry out and perform its function. Plants capture their energy through a process called photosynthesis which is from the sun.

  4. Th name of this article is NASA finds shrimp dinner on ice beneath Antarctica written by Seth Borenstein, a member of the associated press. I found this articl interesting as it talked about how scientists for the first time found a shrimp-like creature and a jellyfish frolicking beneath a massive Antarctic ice sheet. The Lyssianasid amphipod is 3 inches long and is an orange critter. According to Microbiologist Cynan Ellis-Evans of the British Antarctic Survey, "This is a first for the sub-glacial environment with that level of sophistication."

Another article I found was from The San Diego Union- Tribune and written by Scott Lafee. The name of this article is The Lonely but Hopeful Search for Life off Earth. This article focuses on how efforts to find evidence of life beyond Earth, intelligent or otherwise, have only broadened, deepened and become more determined over the years. An astrobiologist at East Carolina University, John Rummel stated, “One of the things we’ve learned in the search for extraterrestrial life is that people get upset when you don’t find it." In the article it also says that beyond the solar system, at least 430 “exoplanets” have been identified, and the number is growing.

  5. In this article scientist have just uncovered that a shrimp like structure which is really a lyssianasid amphipod can live beneath six hundred feet below ice and with the shrimp a jellyfish And now it has scientist wondering what else can live in other harsh environments like the europa a frozen moon of Jupiter. And now scientist think of what else they are missing on the planet.

In the article it states that a mission is proposed to go to europa one of Jupiter’s moons with possible liquid on it and that means there could be life existing on there too. There is already some evidence that a microbial life may be on there and has been existing.

They found a Lyssianasid amphipod which is related to a shrimp, and a tentacle that they believe is from a foot long jellyfish. Microbiologist Cynan Ellis-Evans of the British Antarctic Survey found that the find was intriguing. He says that the creatures that they found did not live there permanently but swam in from far away. Others though do not believe this. Scientists are still puzzled about how these creatures could have survived down there.

In this article located Here it talks about how a $420 million dollar Phoenix lander has collected a dirt sample off the surface of Mars that has all of the requirements that would need to be able to grow food, and be good for life. The dirt had a pH of 8 or 9. The scientists that were on the mission were all excited about their findings. This proves that others planets do have the things required for life.

  7. In the article provided by Seth Borenstein, it talks about how scientist found a jellyfish like creature under a massive ice structure in Antarctica. At the depth of 600 ft, there is no visible light and there was believed nothing living other than microbes. When they lowered there video camera down, they had the assumption that there was nothing there. To their surprise they found an orange 3 inch long critter. With something being able to live in these hostile conditions it makes NASA wonder if their could be something living in places like Jupiter.

The article I found was about different bacteria living and surviving in adverse conditions. Some particular bacteria can live in temperatures as low as -15c , and as high as 121c. With these bacteria living in such extreme conditions it leaves scientist wondering if other organisms, on other planets could survive.

  9. In the article “NASA finds shrimp dinner on ice below Antarctica”, a team of NASA scientist went to Antarctica to see what could live 600 feet below an Arctic ice sheet. They sent down a video camera and shot a 2minute video. They did not expect to find anything but they were very wrong. They found a shrimp like thing and a 1 foot long jelly fish like thing. The NASA team said that they were surprised when they saw the shrimp like thing just sitting on the cable that was holding the camera. The team does not know what the shrimp or the jelly fish like thing eat or see under the 600 feet of ice. This is all one great mystery and changes everything that we know today. Scientists are now thinking that if creatures can live in these conditions, then maybe they can also live in other harsh conditions like those found in outer space. Maybe there’s life on another planet.

In the article “Target Europa: Ambitious Plans Aim for Jupiter’s Ocean Moon”, NASA and other space agencies in Europe, Russia and Japan are all interested in studying the moons that surround Jupiter. The name of this mission is Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM)t. America and Russia will be specifically looking into Jupiter’s Ocean Moon called Europa. Scientists are trying to do some tests to see if there are any living things on that moon under its frozen surface. They’d like to see if we can live there in the future. This mission will not be held for another several years, probably in the 2020s, or until to go ahead from the President. Scientists feel that landing on Europa may be very difficult since it’s very rocky and has a shell of water around it 100 miles thick. Scientists think the ice is thin but they aren’t sure. They need to get under the ice to see if anything is alive.

  10. The article is about how scientist discovered a shrimp-like creature and a jelly fish in Antarctica. The amazing thing about this is that it was 600 ft below the ice were not even sunlight can get through. It is a mystery on how the creatures survive.

A recent discovery has proved that a species of beetle known as the Onthophagus Taurus is the strongest bug in the world. It can lift more than 1,411 times its own weight. That is as if a 150 lbs person (like me) can pick up 6 double Decker buses with people inside of them. They have horns for fighting methods to win over female beetles. That is what helps them be so strong.

  11. Scientists researched the life 600 feet below the ice in the Antarctic. They found that only a few microbes cold exist below the ice. They where very surprised to find this when NASA lowered a camera down into the water. Scientists also found a tentacle, which they believe belongs to a foot long jelly fish.

Scientists sent Kepler the spacecraft to search for life on other planets. Scientists say that Kepler will find at least a dozen planets (if they exist). Its main goal is to search for the shadows of other planets by using its core which carries 55-inch-diameter telescope with a 95-million-pixel digital camera. And it will read the brightness of over 100,000 every half hour.
