Extinct New Zealand eagle may have eaten humans

Many organisms have gone extinct, for many different reasons. This article discussed an eagle, the largest eagle ever known to exist. What caused it to go extinct? Read the article and find out what the leading theories are.

For this project you should start by reading this article that discusses the Haast's eagle became extinct about 500 years ago. Then write a paragraph that summarized the article. Paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Finally you should link to an article about any other topic related to evolution. It can be about other organisms extinctions or continued existence over long tracts of time. It could be about how conditions led to extinctions of specific species. It could be about different types of evidence for evolution. Finally write a paragraph summarizing the material in that article. Again, paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Make sure you put your ID and class section on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 9/27. Remember, you are required to do either this project or the one that will come next. If you do both, one will count for extra credit. If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com.

    quagga

This article i found was about an exctinct animal known as the quagga. The Quagga was a subspecies of the Zebra that lived in Africa. It was first classified in 1788. It looked like a normal Zebra, but the top half of the quagga was brown and the botom half was white. The quagga also had black and white stripes in the front half of the body, but was still brown. In the middle of the stomach there is a patch of dark brown hair. The quagga didn't have much of an history besides the fact that they were hunted to extinction in 1883

This article is about the Haast Eagle. This eagle weighted forty pounds and became extinct about 500 years ago. One of the reasons why it became extinct is because of habitat destruction and extinction of its prey. Using Computed axial tomography or CAT they scanned skulls, a pelvis, and a beak in order to reconstruct the size of the brain, eyes, ears, and spinal cord. The body of this eagle had enlarged in size over time due to the size of the prey it had to adapt to.

This article that I found is about the extinction of Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million years ago. Although dinosaurs were not the only species on earth that died and became extinct. The thing that killed all the dinosaurs also killed 70% of all other species on earth during that time. There are two good theories of how the dinosaurs became extinct and they are the Volcano theory and the asteroids.

  4. The previously stated article by MICHAEL CASEY, discusses the life and extinction of the Haast Eagle. During the eagle's lifetime they could grow as large as forty pounds. The Haast Eagle became extinct about 500 years ago, due to destruction of habitat and the extinction of its prey, due to early settlers. With a CAT scan, of the pelvis beak and skull, the researchers were able to reconstruct the spinal cord, brain and ears. After researching the eagle, it was believed that it evolved from a much smaller ancestor. The body had grown up to ten times from its normal size, while the brain remained the same size. These were all adaptations it made to survive.

The document I found by CORNELIA DEAN, is about the theory of evolution of man kind vs. religion. Many follows of different religions believe that the "god" put them, or there ancestors on the earth. Though this is a widely accepted idea, the more logical reason we are here is evolution, from primates such as the ape and chimpanzee. Evolution is the reason there are so many diverse and different types of life on the Earth.

  5. This article written by Michael Casey and deals with evolution over time. He writes about an extict Haast eagle that was a giant, ancient raptor that weighed about 40 pounds and became extinct over 500 years ago. Its natural habitat was in the mountains of New Zealand and was a predator. It eventuall became extict due to habitat destruction and when its prey became extinct.

Another article relating to evolution that I found was about the new finding that great white sharks are not descended from a megatoothed megashark, but from the mako shark. This article was written by Sean S. Carrolland is an article from the New York Times. This a great article and is interesting giving many details and even refers to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

  6. Around 500 years ago, researchers believe the extinction of an extremely large eagle took place. This bird, known as the Haast's eagle, was estimated to be at least forty pounds, and thought to have eaten other large flightless birds, and even small humans. Their remains were found in New Zealand. Researchers were also led to believe that this bird evolved from a smaller animal in a fairly quick amount of time, while the body grew faster than the brain. Fossilized evidence revealed that these eagles probably became extinct after a drastic change in their habitat.

Another extinct bird is the Dodo, and based on another article from the American Museum Of Natural History, they became extinct because of deforestation, which cut off their food supply and nesting area, and they were eaten by the sailors who discovered them. It was uncovered that this bird was flightless, but evolved that way when living in their natural habitat did not make it necessary for them to fly. The Dodo was only recorded living for eighty years during the 1600’s.

It did not allowed me to post the link, so this is the website I used:

  7. About 500 years ago when this eagle was alive the researchers believed that he could have killed a young child. This eagle was about 40 pounds they also did not know that he was a scavenger which later on was proved wrong.People lived near the Haast eagle about 750 years ago. The scientists believe the went extint 500 years ago by destruction of their habbitat so that made it that they could not survive any more also they were running out of prey to eat because they were not scavengers.Scientists studied their very fragile fossils with nondestructive technics to see how they survived as long as they did.

  8. This article is about an ancient New Zealand eagle that may have eaten humans over one million years ago. The bird was believed to live on mountains in New Zealand and weigh over 40 pounds. Two scientists, Ken Ashwell and Paul Scofield, used the information that both had and compared that information to discover that the Haast eagle has certain traits that some birds have today. Also most of the Haast’s eagle prey included other flightless birds. The scientists also believed that the Haast’s eagle evolved from a much smaller relative.

This article is about a Dinosaur print found in Paris, France. The dinosaur print that was found is believed to be 4.6 to 4.9 feet long. Also the print is to be well preserved from the last Jurassic period. Around the sight, other trace of dinosaur evidence was found. More footprints were found in mud fro over 150 million years ago. The dinosaur footprints that are in the mud are believed to weigh over 33 tons. Scientists can then calculate the size and speed of he dinosaurs.

  9. The Haasts eagle was a big bird that was said to have been 40 pounds and was a killer of humans and ground animals. It became extinct about 500 years ago but scientists have recently performed a CAT scan and the body especially the skull of the bird. The Eagles body was said to have evolved faster than its brain. They use CAT scan to determine behavior of Haasts Eagle. The modern technology was used to prove that the Eagle was a predator and how rapidly evolution can occur because of the size of the bird growing so quickly but the brain of the bird evolving so slowly. The bird became extinct due to habitat destruction.
Koalas in Australia are suffering because of the destruction of their trees and leaves which help them live. This has caused stress among the Koala species and has caused a disease called chlamydiosis. The population has dropped about 100 thousand Koalas since the Europeans moved in the 1700’s. The Koalas are so special to Australia and the people of Australia should do more to help save their treasured animals. This disease can cause infertility and make it so that koalas have a harder time reproducing.
