5 New Feathered Dinosaurs

Origin of birds confirmed by exceptional new dinosaur fossils

For this project you should start by reading this article that describes some finds of fossils that add to the wealth of information about early birds. Then write a paragraph that summarized the article. Paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Finally you should link to an article about any other topic related to evidence of past organisms. There are many examples of where new finds filled in information that scientists had been looking for. Finally write a paragraph summarizing the material in that article. Again, paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Make sure you put your ID and class section on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 10/11. If you did not do the last project you are required to do this one. If you do both projects one will count for extra credit. If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com.

  1. This article is about an ancient raptor that is called the Haast Eagle. The eagle is now extinct and became extinct about 500 years ago. This raptor weighted about 40 pounds. What scientist are doing is scanning several skulls, pelvis, and a beak. In doing this they are trying to reconstruct the actualy size of the birds brain, eyes, ears, and spinal cord. It became extinct due to habbitat destruction and extinction of the species that it preyed on. The reason for it being so big is due tot he size of the animals it preyed on. They were the only prey it had access to in New Zealand. This is a prime example of evolution taking place.

    Bite Marks

This article is about the Tyrannosaurus Rex. It is saying that one of the possible reasons for the extinction of the T-Rexes could have been a single celled parasite. This parasite caused a hole in the jaw bone. This hole could have caused them to not be able to eat which would have lead to their death from starvation. They first thought that it could have been from bite marks but for one thing they have many teeth and not just one. If it was from bite marks there would have been holes in groups. The hole found in the jaw bone is perfectly cicular. Also there are no scratch makes around the area where the hole is. This disease cold have been passes t-rex to t-rex, during combat or during mating.

  2. This article provided by University of Bristol, states how the recent discovery of a feathered dinosaur like bird. This dinosaur is believed to be older than the Archaeopteryx. The Archaeopteryx was the oldest known bird up to this time, known through radioactive dating. Professor Michael Benton calls the new discovery of the Dinosaur the “missing link” in the chain of the species between birds and Dinosaurs. With this new discovery the scientist can accurately make an acquisition that bird’s descended from Dinosaurs. Seeing how this Dinosaur had feathers the evolution of feathers to birds is now understandable.

The article by Sean .B. Carroll, shows how Matt Hopper believed the great white shark had evolved from a megalodon. The megalodon was a very large sharp toothed sea monster. After he had taken time and researched the great white shark had evolved from a smooth tooth small mako shark. If true, then the mouth full of flesh-ripping razor blades that are the stuff of nightmares, and box-office blockbusters, are also a great example of one of the most interesting phenomena in the story of life, convergent evolution the independent evolution of similar adaptations by different creatures. The evidence like the bone structure and the serrated teeth of the great white shark all pointed to the descendent of the megalodon. This was the common belief among scientist like Charles Darwin. Until only recently did we know that the great white shark descended from the less fierce mako shark.

  3. Until recently, the oldest known bird was the Archaeopteryx, a bird that lived between 150 and 145 million years ago. But scientists in China discovered several new fossils which revealed a whole new look on birds and closed many gaps in the evolution of birds. These fossils gave scientists an idea of where feathered wings and feet were derived from, and fills a huge evolutionary gap where scientists were not sure what lived during this time or how things came to be after this time.
Scientists were also not entirely sure about flatfish, such as flounder or halibut, and how exactly their eyes ended up on side of their flattened body. In this article,
it is discovered that flatfish had not evolved the way it had been most commonly believed to have happened, which was in one skull-morphing mutation. Based on evidence from past life and new fossils, scientists concluded that this skull of these fish gradually evolved over time.

  4. This article is provided by the University of Bristol and talks about how a new orgin of birds have been confirmed to be as the oldest birds ever to be founded. These new bird have beat out the Archaeopteryx which lived about 150-145 million years ago. These new fossils are named the Tiaojishan and Daohugou formations these five different dinosaurs had feathers. The Tiaojishan formation is thought to be about 168 to 151 million years old, and the Daohugou Formation is thought to be about 164 to 158 million years old.

An article I found relating to this was a discovery that ancient birds flew on all fours. This discovery of these birds had glided from trees using primitive feathered wings on both their arms and legs. This research was done by a University of Calgary paleontologist.

  5. They have recently found a fossil that has helped scientist in a big way with animal history. The discovery for this new fossil is remarkable it is the oldest fossil of that type that has ever been found and it has helped scientist find out that birds are not related to dinosaurs the way they thought.

In China they have recently found a fossil of a bird called Eoconfuiusornis zhengi it is dated to be a 150 million yrs. Old witch is the Jurassic period. The new discovery adds to the species had glided in this part of the world 125 million yrs. Ago.

  7. Scientists describe feathers to be a next step to how to find out more about feathered creatures millions of years ago. Which Chinese scientists found five feathered dinosaur fossils and is the oldest dinosaur they have found enough evidence for. And each each of these birds provided another step towards finding more about the creatures that lived millions of years ago.

Scientists found a female hominid skeleton that was 4 feet tall and found that they could walk up right, which revealed new evidence for these species. This find has provided scientists with enough information to discover the belief that chimpanzees and humans evolved individually from a common ancestor. Ardi (the hominid skeleton that was found) had a brain the size of a chimpanzees and it had many human like features.

  8. This article is about the new discovery of a dinosaur that was known to have feathers and be “bird-like”. The new dinosaur is believed to be older than the recent bird Archaeopteryx. A well-known college professor, Michael Benton, had a great deal of excitment over the new discovery saying “This is one of the most exciting fossil discoveries in recent years. It’s like finding a missing piece of the Jigsaw”. He is saying that it’s one of the lost pieces that is now found for the theory of evolution. However scientist say that feathered dinosaurs cannot be related to our modern day birds. So until more information is found, Archaeopteryx is still the oldest known bird fossil.

This article is about scientists discovering a 40-million-year-old fossil of a living feather that has iridescent colors. This finding gives us the first evidence of a preserved color producing nanostructure in a feather that has been fossilized. The fossil was originally from Messel Shale. German scientists have discovered a smooth layer on top of the fossil and have named the layer melanosomes.

  9. This is an article about a finding of a dinousour like bird fossil. Scientist say its older then the oldest known bird fossil, Archaeopteryx. This fossil shows that there were many feathers on the feet. The scientist said this discovery was like "finding a missing piece from a jig saw puzzle". It helps complete the explaining of the theory of evolution.

This article is about how sciecntist think that great white sharks evolved from megalodon the feared sea monster from many years ago. Someone researched further more and also so that great white's and the smoothed toothed small mako shark have alot in common. It was first thought by Charles Darwin that the great whites decended from the sea monster beacause if it's razor sharp teeth. But we now know they are from the mako sharks they just had adaptations of sharper teeth.

    New fossils found.

This article is about a new fossil that was recently found that fills in information for scientists. This new fossil connects many gaps in the theory of evolution of humans. This new fossil was said to be “the first link to all humans”

  12. This article describes the findings of an ancient feathered bird. Its a special finding because its the oldest feathered fossil humans have found. These fossils are older than the previous bird that was found. This fossil did not have feathers. That means that feathered birds could have descended from theropod dinosaurs. It was the missing piece of the bird-dinosaur hypothesis.

  15. This article discusses the recent findings of five new feathered birds that date back to before the Archaeopteryx even existed. The Archaeopteryx was the oldest bird ever discovered. Dr Xu Xing in a conference in Bristol says that before this finding everything was a mystery and it made no sense. Now everything fits together and it makes sense. One expert on dinosaurs says that this is almost like a missing peice of a jigsaw and now it looks complete. The fossils are from two different areas. They are from the Tiaojishan and Daohugou formations. The Tiaojishan dates back to about 168-151 million years ago and the other 164-158. The Archaeopteryx lived about 150 million years ago and this show that the fossils that were recently discovered are actually older than the Archaeopteryx. Also the discovery of the new fossils supports the idea that birds descended from the dinosaurs.

  16. Archaeopteryx the oldest undisputed bird that was ever found. These birds lived 145 to 150 million years ago. The fossils are separated by two different areas. These are called the Tiaojishan and Diaohugou fossils. The bird dinosaurs descended from a group of predatory dinosaurs that include Allosquros and Velciraptor. Xu says “the fossils provide confirmation that the bird-dinosaurs hypothesis is correct”. MC:Red

  17. This article is about discovering remains of an ancient bird. The Archaeopteryx, which was brought in by the University of Bristol, one of the world’s leading experts on dinosaurs."At the time, many paleontologists considered this to be the Holy Grail that demonstrated once and for all that birds are highly derived dinosaurs." Which means this is a long last raptor that has jsut been discovered and is a huge landmark in historic time. the raptor lived in the isotopic dates range from 168 to 151 million years old.

  19. Chinese scientists discovered 5 feathered fossils said to be indisputably older than Arachaeopteryx the oldest known bird, providing evidence that birds evolved from dinosaurs. Scientists later dicovered Arachaeopteryx is actually older than those feathered fossils. This brought critics to the conclusion feathered dinosaurs could not have been ancestoral to birds.

  21. Origin of birds

The finding of fossilized feathers was a very important discovery at the time. It proved that birds where linked to dinosaurs. However scientist soon made the discovery that birds existed way before the dinosaurs did. There for birds and dinosaurs may not be linked at all.

In the second article I read it discussed how the jaw bone has evolved drastically to improve the animal survival rate. The way the ear bone disconnected from the jaw bone in some of the animals improved there hearing. Also the way the bottom jaw was hinged on made feeding better.
