"Predator X" was a pliosaur (click on this link for more info on the pliosaur), that lived between 200 million and 65 million years ago. It was the top predator of the marine environment.The article that you should read discusses the bite strength of the pliosaur. For this extra credit project you should read and discuss in at least two sentences what the article is about. Then your job is to discover how they find out things about dinosaurs and other fossils. Some topics for discussion are below, but there are many things that "they" tell us about extinct species that cause me to wonder, "how could they know that"?

ReplyDeleteThe article below states that scientists think that T-Rex's vision was very good and there was no reason to think it could only see moving things. I guess the director of the movie just made that one up to make the movie more interesting. The article also gives some neat info on T-Rex’s like how fast they run and how big their bite was. I was very surprised to find out that they didn’t run very fast. You would think that since their prey is fast that they should be fast as well.

I know the page I found was not exactly an article so let me know if it's not alright. This discusses that the way scientists know what dinosaurs ate is based on their teeth. For example, if they ate meat, they had sharp teeth. Their teeth varied with every type of a dinosaur's diet.

This article was interesting to read, I think due to the comparisons made between the "Predator X" sea monster and the T-Rex. All along, everyone has believed that the T-Rex was the most fierce and powerful dinosaur ever. However, it appears as if "Preadator X" not only surpasses the T-Rex in biting capacity. but also size and overall strength as well.

The link I found relates to dinosaurs in general with facts and answers to general questions. Scientists must study many factors when making assessments such as how old a dinosaur was, whether it ate plants or meat, or how fast they walked or ran. However, I am still not sure that it is completely possible to understand details of certain characteristics of dinosaurs based on pieces of bones or fragments of teeth which are found in incomplete circumstances. I think a great amount of guess work must be involved.

In this article it goes on to explain how we can find out how old fossils are. Not only can we find out how old it is but say for example we find remains of a tree, that can tell us how old the tree is, and also what the environment was like back when this tree was alive. I find that very amazing that we can tell the environment from over 1 million years ago just from remains of an old tree.

In this article it proves that what they say in Jurrassic Park is wrong. The T-rexs had one of the seeing abilities in animal history. Scientists have said that the T-rex probably could see 13x more than people. Although they didnt have good peripheral vision "if you're sweating in fear 1 inch front the nostrils of the T. rex, it would figure out you were there anyway."

In the article I found the author describes the different ways that the T-Rex and other dinosaurs like it bite. The "Predator X" and T-Rex when biting crushed the bones of the victum. Scientists believe many dinsaurs like the Allosaurus tore their victums to peices and ate them due to findngs on the skulls of victums which show hatchet like marks. These dinsoaurs have a overly strong upper skull but a comparitivley weak jaw bone whcih scients agree is a adaption in which the Allosaurus crushes its top jaw into the victum while the bottom jaw stays in place.

I find it interesting that the pliosaur had a small thin brain shaped similar to that of a great white shark, even though the pliosaur is much more powerful.

Then they use a computer stimulation to explore how the bone would have responded to stresses transmitted during feeding. I found this article to be interesting.
