To be antibiotic resistant, or not to be?
Antibiotic resistance is becoming a large problem in protecting the public health. There has been a great deal in the news, and we even had a local scare at AP with MRSA.
For this project you will have to:
1. Read this article, about this new approach to dealing with bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Write 2 – 3 sentences about what you think about the article.
2. Find an article about antibiotic resistance that you think is interesting, write 2 – 3 sentences about that article and link to it, so that others can see it if they like.
Make sure that you have your initials and section color.
This project is due by midnight on Friday Feb. 27.

A compound made from the sea sponge helps in the fight against antibiotic resistant bacteria. That is an important development because drug-resistant bacteria are a big problem in many hospitals all over the United States and the world. MRSA is one of such infections, and it kills about 19,000 people in the United States . The new substance was tested on MRSA and was effective. Scientists are working hard to find other substances in the fight against resistant bacteria. I found two more examples:
ReplyDeletethe article that intrested me is about clay cure. Who would think that clay can help us in the fight against MRSA infections. That is exactly what scientists are uncovering right now. Healing clays could be applied as rub-on creams or ointments to keep MRSA from spreading. The clays can also be used against other harmful bacteria. This shows how many healing agents are hidden in nature. We don't always have to find new chemicals in the fight against disease.

I think that this artical healped me understand what scientics go through to find a cure for organisms that resist antibiotics. If scientists find the cure to a disease such as MRSA, that furthers their research for cures to other diseases such as cancer.
ReplyDeleteThe artical that i choose is about the resistance to antibiotics Click Here; whats wrong with using multiple antibiotics, what it means to be resistant to antibiotics, and how we reduce the problem of being resistant. I feel as though this artical is relateable and its easy to understand whats going on.

In the article "Seasponge shows promise as superbug antidote" I think that it helps me better understand. More and more drug-resistant bacteria are becoming a predicament for the scientists reasearching them. But the idea that they could make once resistant bacteria sensitive to antibodies is really cool. Hopefully they will extend thier experimentation with other diseses and cure AIDS
ReplyDeleteThe article I chose was about a team of Indian scientists who discovered antibotics and antibotic resistant bacteria in Indian hospital waters Click Here. Also E. coli was showing that it was resistant to some 3rd generation bacteria. I find this remarkable that it could be happening in India, hopefully they will try to fix thier problem and that it wont turn in to a problem we have.

ReplyDeleteGiving antibiotics to animals increases our human risk- so why would we choose to increase bacteria resistance to antibiotics by giving them to animals? What purpose is so important that they would put antibiotics in peril? It would be interesting to discover why they are prescribed even though there is a danger in it. I was amazed to know that 70% of hospital bacteria were already resistant and yet we keep on giving antibiotics to animals! As far as doctors over prescribing, they need to give a little tough love and tell their patients to stop being babies! Patients need to understand that antibiotics are NOT the miricle drugs and can NOT cure everything.

1.) I think that discovering a compound from a sea sponge that could help make antibiotic resistant germs non-resistant would be a great enhancement in society. I think it would be great because germs that can make people even more sick in hospitals could actually be destroyed or at least not contagious. Also, it could help prevent, in some cases, people from dying.
ReplyDelete2.) Antibiotics in Food Click Here
This article tells about how some antibiotics they are giving the animals that provide food could eventually result in the animals being resistant to the antibiotic. If the animals become resistant, it could spread so many different diseases. People could become infected with a lot of food born illnesses and it could lead to many major problems of people being sick or dying.

If people are beginning to realize that these sea plants will help people from not getting sick from these pathogens. It is hope that some day people might not get sick when these pathogens get into the body. Doctors and hospitals should get these products so that they can help cure people that are seriously ill.
ReplyDeletePenicillin was highly available during the Second World War Click Here. Many people took this drug for the conditions that they developed during the war. After the Second World War companies began to mass produce penicillin

1. From the article, I learned that not only humans have the ability to create antibiotic resistance. Had scientists had known this last year, they could have helped to prevent the outbreak of MRSA. This could lead to a new wave of antibiotics to prevent diseases.
ReplyDeleteBacterial Infections in Hospitals
2. From my article chosen, I learned that since the 1997, MRSA outbreaks in hospital ICU’s (intensive care units) have dropped about 50%. One person thinks it’s because hospitals have been getting cleaner, in order to prevent diseases. The important part is that hospitals are trying to prevent the diseases that they are trying to heal and cure.

article about antibiotic resistance
ReplyDeleteI thought this article was interesting. I learned a lot about antibiotic resistance from this article. I learned that 19,000 people a year are killed by drug resistant bacteria. In the article it said that they found a piece of living coral in an area where the rest were dead.
I also thought this other article was interesting too. One thing I learned from this article was that bacteria goes through the stages fast and replicate very quickly. Also antibiotic resistance can be reduced too. But it is bad because it reduces a drugs ability to protect against a disease.

It seems hard to imagine in this day and age after science has conquered so many illnesses and made such great advancements in medicine, that resistance to certain antibiotics is possible. It is very promising that the sea sponge would be aiding scientists in the advancement of the study of drug resistant bacteria. It is especially helpful that the compounds tested are non-toxic and it will be interesting to see in the future, the endless possibilities that may occur in medical research.
ReplyDeleteSupermarket Pharmacies Get Smart
I found this article interesting for two reasons. First, apparently even though it is not widespread in our area, supermarkets are giving free antibiotics. Secondly, the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) would like supermarkets to give free flu shots instead of free antibiotics. The overuse of antibiotics is what contributes to the problem of drug resistant bacteria which causes the rise of many "Superbug" infections such a MRSA. If the use of antibiotics was lessened and more people were educated about the importance of when to use antibiotics appropriately, perhaps less cases of drug resistant bacteria would threaten the population.

Scientists found a sea sponge that had a special compound in it that could change life as we know it. This compound could help fight against antibiotic reststance. this is a good thing because it can reduce amount of deaths in america by alot if we can save them from deadly diseases
ReplyDeleteCopy this Html Know when antibiotics work
This article is about when you should and shouldnt take antibiotics, like when you get a cold or the flu. Antibiotics do not cure viruses. Also when taking antibiotics with a cold or the flu it could do more harm than good. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed can increase your chances of getting an infection later on.

Scientists have found that a sea sponge is resistant to biofilms which make up most human affecting pathogens. The sponge also repels resistant bacteria which have been a growing problem in the last couple of years.
ReplyDeleteAntibody eating Bacteria?
Researchers have found a bacterium that is resistant and flourishes on the use of antibiotics by eating them for nutrition. These bacteria are dubbed “super resistant” and can endure fifty times the normal antibiotics used to test if a bacteria resistant.
SJB - Yellow
Scientists have found a sea sponge is resistant to some types of bacteria. This sea sponge is able to live in conditions where other organisms would normally die. This discovery can lead to possibly new cures or preventions rather to bacterial infections. This could definitely help reduce the 19,000 people in the US alone that die each year due to bacteria and antibiotics.
ReplyDeleteDo antibiotics interact with birth control pills?
This article is interesting and a little scary too. It deals with antibiotics and birth control, and the antibiotics could possible decrease the effectiveness of the birth control, allowing pregnancy changes to increase. The article includes some ways to help, like a recommended use of a condom for about a the first week while taking antibiotics and birth control at the same time.

Antibitic resistance is becoming a very serious problem and i think it really cool that we keep finding natural things that can help us. In the case of these see sponges we sipmply found them by people just swimming around and that is cool. The sad reality is we need to keep stealing stuff from nature to fix are mistakes and over use of things.
ReplyDeleteLivestock and Resistance
In this article it talks about the over use of antibiotics in live stock. Bacteria in livestock are quickly becoming immune to antibitics the give them for health reasons and to promote growth. This could be deadly because we eat these animals and some of the diseases may stay with it and inturn we may eat it, for example Salmonella.

Well I think that having bacteria resistant to antibiotics is really bad becuase eventually the medicine we use won't work in protecting us. I think that a sponge that is resistant to bacteria is pretty cool and maybe we can use it ourselves.
ReplyDeleteAntibiotic Resistance
In this article talks about how its bad to use to many antibiotics because bacteria can go threw many generations in a short amount of time. If you use to many antibiotics the bacteria will eventually figure out how to kill the drug and get you sick.

This sea sponge is really cool i think it could possibly be able to help in the curing bacterial infections in the near future. It will be a great help in keeping people more healthy and possibly raise Longevity.
ReplyDeleteStong dirty bacteria!?!
This article makes me not want to play in the mud. Apparently bacteria that live in the dirt are evolving to be able to detoxify antibiotics. They tested mutiple bacteria and surprisingly each bacteria was resitant to atleast 7 of the antibiotics and some were resitant to 15.
HC Green
In the article there were many interesting facts that I had learned. A fact that I learned was what biofilms were. Before I read this article I had no clue what they were. I think that with the scientists doing this research that advancement may come along in antibiotics in the near future.
ReplyDeleteThe article I chose was about how
Antibiotic resistance is a worldwide public health problem and how many people expect or will ask their physicians to prescribe antibiotics when they feel sick or have a cold. It is estimated that 50% of prescriptions prescribed are unnecessary because they were being prescribed for colds, coughs, and other viral infections. The improper use and abuse of antibiotics had led to the development of antibiotic resistance.

It is cool that the sponge is an antibody to diseases that have been incurable before. Maybe in the future there will be vaccines made from the sponge that will keep people from getting theses diseases. I just wounder why the sponge wasn't found before now.
ReplyDeleteThe artical I chose is about diseases that are immune to antibiotics. Some diseases have mutated over time so that they are not killed by antibodies that used to kill these diseases. It also says that scientists continue to try to find ways to cure diseases that could be deadly.

ReplyDeleteI have had MRSA twice and I know just how and what it feels like. I am very happy to hear that they are working on ways to help stop prevent it.

I think it is scary knowing some medications can't and won't treat some illnesses. I didn't know
that if you didn't continue to take your prescirbed medication that it could contribute
to resistance. I am glad my mom has always made me
finish my medication.

I think its amazing how scientists find solutions to problems in such interesting places. Antibiotic resistance is a huge problem and needs to be fixed or held back as best as possible. I had a MRSA infection when i was younger and it was terrible.
