Unlocking secrets

Among 22 ancient Egyptian mummies who received full-body computed tomography scans, 16 had hearts or arteries preserved enough to study.

Modern scientists have a vast array of tools to examine the world around them. Using CT scans to check medical conditions can give lots of information, not only about the individuals, but the history of man's condition.

For this project you should start by reading this article that discusses a study of ancient Egyptian mummies. Then write a paragraph that summarized the article. Paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Then you should find and link to an article about one of the following:
1. The study of any body system or disease, current or historical.
2. The use of modern technology to discover information about the body.
3. Information about a body system, like: digestive, excretory, circulatory, musculoskeletal, nervous or endocrine.

Finally write a paragraph summarizing the material in that article. Again, paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Make sure you put your ID and class section on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 12/13. Remember that you need to do either this or the previous project. If you do both projects one will count for extra credit. If you did not do the previous article you must do this article.

If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com.

  1. This article is about atherosclerosis and how long it has been around. In a study of 22 mummies who had gotten tomography scans, 16 of them had hearts or arteries that were preserved. From the 16 that had the preserved hearts or arteries nine of them showed evidence of blockage from atherosclerosis. This is showing you that this disease has been around a really long time. The mummies in the museum ranged from 2,000 to 3,500 years old. On the scan the build up of fat, cholesterol, and other substances was as distinct for the dead as it was for the living. Merenptah who ruled around 1200BC has suffered from atherosclerosis

This article that i found is about the circulatory system. It is made up of vessels and muscles that help to circulate blood through the body. The main parts to this system are arteries, capillaries, and veins. Blood leaves the heart through the left ventricle into the aorta. This is the largest artery in the body. Blood leaving the aorta is full of oxygen. This is important for the cells in the brain and the body to do their work. On the way back to the heart the blood travels through veins.

  3. From sciencenews.org, an article by Laura Beil, called Mummies reveal heart disease plagued ancient Egyptians, talks about how CT scans of preserved individuals show hardening of arteries similar to that seen in people today. This article is about atherosclerosis and how long it has been around. In a study of 22 mummies who had gotten tomography scans, 16 of them had hearts or arteries that were preserved. According to Randall Thomas,“This disease has been around since before the time of Moses."

An article I found on sciencedaily.com called Heavy Metal Paradox Could Point Toward New Therapy for Lou Gehrig's Disease talks about how new discoveries have been made about how an elevated level of lead, which is a neurotoxic heavy metal, can slow the progression of Lou Gerhig's disease. These new findings according to researchers could point the way to a new type of therapy. According to Joseph Beckman,"Many people have spent thousands of dollars on chelation therapy to treat ALS, despite a lack of scientific evidence that heavy metals are causing the disease."

  4. In the article “Mummies Reveal Heart Disease Plagued Ancient Egyptians”, scientists discovered that the ancient Egyptians suffered from hardening of the arteries. We did not know that this existed during their time period. We thought it was only something that happened to people now. The scientists think the Egyptians had hardening of the arteries because of the high salt content due to the food preservation process. Today, we think hardening of the arteries happens because of smoking, fast food and lack of exercise.

In an article on genes and human digestion, researchers found that all people don’t have the same bacteria living in their gut. Although they expected to find a core set of bacteria that aids digestion in everyone’s stomach, their research proved this was not true. The group did all have the same bacterial genes needed for digestion however.. Also, people who were related had similar bacteria in their gut. Research also identified difference in the genes of obese and thin people. Obese people had more genes for digesting food, making them better at extracting and storing energy from their food.

  6. The article previously stated by Laura Beil, was about how heart disease is much less recent than we think it is, and not only caused by our modern amenities. Off 22 total mummies scanned 16 had heart and arteries preserved, and 9 of those had a form of blockage from atherosclerosis. Previously mummies were given X Ray scans but no tissue etc, would show up on an X ray. A CT scan shows fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances inside artery walls. It looks as distinct for the dead as the living. Though the people who suffered from this disease ate a diet that consisted of a high salt, to preserve the food, Robert Bonow says that people on modern diets are not as of high as a risk.
The I article found was about, how cancer starts and spreads. Calls are the building blocks of the living body, and cancer grows rite from normal body cells. Cancer occurs when your body’s cells multiply to quickly, and forget to die. Cancer can occur in almost any tissue or body part. Cancer causes range from Benzene and other chemicals Certain poisonous mushrooms and a type of poison that can grow on peanut plants (aflatoxins), certain viruses, Radiation, Sunlight, and Tobacco. The three most common cancers are colon, lung and breast cancer. The symptoms of cancer determine of the spot of origin.

  7. Scientists have recently discovered that after examining several mummified bodies, that heart disease may not be completely caused by lack of exercise, smoking, and poor eating habits. It turns out that some of these mummies, whose hearts had been preserved enough to examine, already had signs of blockages. It has been thought that heart disease was a fairly modern disease. But after examining these mummies and their lifestyles, it can be said that the preserved foods they ate (which were mostly likely covered in salts) and the pampering of the wealthy may have contributed to the illness, which is much older than scientists would have initially believed.

In this article, Professor Susan Greenfield shares her discoveries on the impact that modern technology could have in the future on the human brain. She claims that neuro-chip technology may blur the lines between living and non-living things, and enhance such things as muscle power and our senses beyond normal. There are already several drugs that have been produced to help curve people’s depression or moods, and a chip is already being invented to help people with paralysis to move a limb just by thinking about it. The human brain can change dramatically over a lifetime, and some of these technological advancements may be beneficial to the development of society, but it could forever change the equality between people on earth.

  8. Scientists found some mummies, which revealed that the sixteen out of the twenty two mummies found had enough of their hearts and arteries preserved that they could determine that heart disease plagued ancient Egypt. This discovery had also proven how long heart disease has been around. Also eight people who lived past the age of 45, seven out of the eight people had signs of clogged arteries.
Scientists have recently found that studying hairs from ancient Peruvians helps us to answer more questions about stress. Hair was used to tell us what life was like and how ancient civilizations reacted to life-changing events like disease or sickness. Also these scientists have found that stress has been a problem for humans for hundreds or possibly thousands of years.

  9. This article is about scientist finding mondern day dieases in mummies from long ago. Nine mummies got tested in a CT scan and 8 showed heart diease and atherosclerosis. These mummies were of upper class so the got these dieases from a high salt diet and being pampered. This study shows that this diease does is not only in mondern man.

Copy this Html Atherosclerosis is a disease where fats collect on this inside of your arteries. When enough builds up it hardens and blocks the passage way. When this happens blood flow to heart slows down and eventually stops. This causes pains in the chest, short breaths, or even a heart attack.
